5.3 Program Evaluation
Candidates design and implement program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of professional learning on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and/or increasing student learning.
Reflection:
In ITEC 7460, we were tasked with creating a professional learning experience for teachers at our schools based on a variety of surveys, interviews, and needs assessment. With all the pieces combined, the technology and professional learning plan was formed and implemented. The professional learning session consisted of teaching middle school teachers a new engaging technology (Quia) followed up with the teachers completing an evaluation of the program. This demonstrates mastery of element 5.3, program evaluation, because the professional learning plan built in evaluations for the teachers to complete after the professional learning session to improve the effectiveness of the sessions.
With the development of this artifact, I learned how to create effective evaluation tools, making sure to give teachers the opportunities to rate the sessions and write open response comments about their overall experience. To improve upon a professional learning session, teacher input is important, especially if they are able to offer their opinions and suggestions. If I was able to change this artifact, I would change the method of evaluation. I like how the evaluation was embedded in the website used during the professional learning sessions, but it was expected that the teachers complete it later on their own. Having an opportunity to gain their initial thoughts before they leave and then following up with a different evaluation would provide a wide range of thoughts and opinions, which can only lead to more improvement for future professional learning sessions. Faculty development is impacted with this artifact, because when professional learning can be improved with teacher input, it results in a positive correlation towards creating more effective professional learning sessions where teachers want to come and learn. This impact can be assessed by discussing any changes implemented with teachers who attend the sessions.
