Vision Statement
Education is constantly changing with the development of new theories and methods. It is important for educators to stay abreast of the evolving world of education, especially in terms of using technology in the classroom. Technology use in the classroom helps to promote collaboration, higher order thinking skills, and authentic tasks. In order for technology to be successful in the classroom, it must support the standards seamlessly. The appeal of technology needs to be how it can enhance a lesson and improve student learning, which is the goal of teaching. Moving past the flashiness of technology is an important step in creating a classroom where technology supports instead of taking center ring.
The use of technology in the classroom is more than just handing students the newest technology. When looking at a classroom where students are using technology to support the concepts they are learning, the teacher would be seen as a facilitator, guiding the students with the use of the technologies but also learning as the students discover new uses for the given technology. The students would be driving the instruction, with all of them using the technology to pursue their findings on the same standards but with different outcomes, chosen by the students themselves. The technologies the students use help them to deepen their understanding of the standards while simultaneously helping them to produce an authentic task that is unique to every student.
Technology in the classroom is more effective when students use them with a purpose to enhance their knowledge and to create individualized products. Education will always be changing and new technologies will continue to be created, but so long as the technology is not used only for the use of the technology but also used to support and enhance learning, then it will promote student learning and growth. In turn, it creates a great learning environment for every student who enters the classroom regardless of his or her abilities.
